Move from Lagos to the UK
This page is about the move itself, not any one visa: the naira cost against a sterling fee, the Nigerian documents a UK application actually asks for, the language test position, and field notes from eMigr8's own Lagos events. eMigr8 provides coaching and guidance, not legal advice or immigration consultation.
UK routes realistically open from Lagos
What it costs, in naira and sterling
Fees are set in sterling; the naira cost moves with the exchange rate as well as with Home Office pricing. Check the current fee on GOV.UK before applying. Official source: GOV.UK, Visa fees, and Central Bank of Nigeria, official exchange rate. Reviewed 30 August 2026.
Documents from Nigeria a UK application actually asks for
National Identification Number (NIMC), a police character certificate (Nigeria Police Force / Interpol NCB Abuja), NYSC discharge or exemption certificate, WAEC results, and degree equivalency via UK ENIC.
Where to apply from: Lagos and Abuja
UK visa applications from Nigeria go through VFS Global's Lagos and Abuja centres, the contracted operator for UKVI application services in the country. Official source: GOV.UK, apply for a UK visa, and VFS Global Nigeria. Reviewed 30 August 2026.
The language test position for Nigerians
Nigeria is a majority English-speaking country in everyday and professional life, but it is not on UKVI's short list of countries granted a blanket exemption from the English-language requirement. Official source: GOV.UK, Skilled Worker visa: knowledge of English. Reviewed 30 August 2026.
A Lagos salary against the UK going rate
A strong senior Lagos salary, converted to sterling, generally sits well below the going rate the Home Office sets for a sponsored UK role in the same occupation code. Official source: GOV.UK, Skilled Worker visa: your job. Reviewed 30 August 2026.
Where Nigerians settle in the UK
Nigerians are one of the larger African-born communities in the UK, with organised community bodies including NIDO-UK (Nigerians in Diaspora Organisation UK). Official source: ONS, Population of the UK by country of birth and nationality. Reviewed 30 August 2026.
What actually came up at our Lagos event
From eMigr8's masterclass in Victoria Island, Lagos, run with Bincom Dev Center and Envestors: reapplying is allowed as many times as needed, though the assessment fee is payable again on each fresh application; an existing business is not required; and naming AI in a business plan does not by itself help or hurt an Innovator Founder application.
