Which occupations count as STEM for Express Entry?

Past STEM rounds have grouped occupations under science, such as chemists and biologists, technology, such as software engineers and computer systems analysts, engineering, such as civil and electrical engineers, and mathematics, such as actuaries and data scientists. The exact National Occupation Classification codes are set in each round's own notice and are not identical every time, so check the specific round notice rather than assuming a fixed list.

What CRS score do I need for a STEM draw?

We are not publishing a specific cutoff figure because past reporting has quoted inconsistent numbers for different rounds. IRCC's rounds of invitations results page lists the actual CRS cutoff for every round it runs, dated, which is the only reliable source for this. Cutoffs move depending on the pool at the time of each round.

Do I need a job offer to be invited under STEM?

No, and a job offer no longer adds CRS points at all following IRCC's removal of job offer points from the Comprehensive Ranking System on 25 March 2025. How much work experience do I need for the STEM category?

Some secondary reporting suggests the minimum qualifying skilled work experience for category-based selection rounds, including STEM, rose from 6 months to 1 year within the past 3 years from 18 February 2026. We have not been able to independently verify this against a primary IRCC notice, so treat it as a reported recent change to confirm on canada.ca rather than a settled fact.

How much does an Express Entry application cost?

Budget around 1,590 Canadian dollars per adult applicant, made up of a 990 Canadian dollar processing fee and a 600 Canadian dollar Right of Permanent Residence Fee, effective 30 April 2026. Is a Provincial Nominee Program stream better than waiting for a STEM draw?

It depends on your profile. A provincial nomination adds a flat 600 CRS points, which makes an invitation highly likely at the next general round, though draw cutoffs and eligibility can still change. It usually requires a genuine connection to that province and its own application process and timeline. If your CRS score is already high without a nomination, waiting for a general or category round may suit you better. This is a comparison worth working through with a coach against your specific numbers.

Can my spouse or partner be included in a STEM category application?

Yes. Express Entry applications can include an accompanying spouse or common-law partner, whose age, education, and language ability contribute additional CRS points, and who is included in the processing and Right of Permanent Residence fees.
