Can I get Italian citizenship on this route?

This visa itself does not grant citizenship. The standard path to citizenship by naturalisation for most non-EU nationals is 10 years of legal residence in Italy under Law 91/1992. A 2025 referendum proposed cutting that to 5 years but failed to meet the turnout quorum needed to take effect, so the 10 year requirement remains in place.

What happened with the 2025 Italian citizenship referendum?

A referendum on 8 and 9 June 2025 asked whether to cut the naturalisation residency requirement from 10 years to 5 years. It did not fail because voters rejected the proposal, it failed because turnout was only around 30 percent, short of the 50 percent plus one quorum Italian law requires for a referendum to take effect. The 10 year requirement therefore remains unchanged.
