Work remotely from Japan, briefly
Japan's Digital Nomad status lets people who work for a company or clients based outside Japan live in the country while continuing that foreign remote work. It launched around 31 March to 1 April 2024 under Notification No. 53. The most important thing to understand before you plan around it: this is a maximum 6 month stay that cannot be renewed or extended, and it carries no credit at all towards permanent residence or any longer-term Japanese status. Read this page in full before you build any relocation plan on it.
Who it is for
Remote employees of a company based outside Japan who want to spend up to 6 months living in Japan without changing employer; Freelancers and contractors with clients based outside Japan; Nationals of a country with both a visa-exemption arrangement and a tax treaty with Japan; People who want a genuine short trial of living in Japan before committing to a longer-term route; Anyone who does not need or want a path to Japanese permanent residence from this particular stay.
How eMigr8 helps
eMigr8 provides coaching and guidance to help you understand this route and plan around it, not legal advice or immigration consultation. This status has no path to settlement and is capped at 6 months with no renewal, so always confirm current eligibility, income, and process requirements with your nearest Japanese embassy or consulate, or with a qualified immigration professional, before you rely on anything here.
