Can my family come with me?

Yes, a spouse and dependent children may accompany you under the parallel Notification No. 54 status, each holding their own qualifying insurance, and they are not permitted to work at all, not even part time. Is this the same as Japan's Highly Skilled Professional visa?

No, and they serve very different goals. The Highly Skilled Professional visa is a points-based, longer-term route generally requiring a Japan-based sponsor, with a fast track to permanent residence in 1 to 3 years. The Digital Nomad visa needs neither a Japan employer nor a Certificate of Eligibility, but is capped at 6 months, not renewable, and carries no credit at all towards settlement. Can I just do remote work on a tourist visa instead?

No. Japan's standard tourist or visa-waiver stay, typically 90 days for most eligible nationalities, prohibits any work, including remote work for a foreign employer carried out while physically in Japan. The Digital Nomad visa exists specifically to legalise that activity, which a tourist visa does not permit.
