The Nomad Residence Permit: Malta's actual remote work route
The Nomad Residence Permit is Malta's dedicated route for remote workers, administered by the Residency Malta Agency. It has been running since 2021, which makes it one of the longer established remote work permits in Europe, and it has been adjusted several times since, most recently with an income threshold increase and new tax guidance in 2026.
Who it is for
Employees of a company registered outside Malta who can work remotely under their existing contract; Partners or shareholders who carry out activities for a foreign registered company; Freelancers and consultants with contracts and clients established outside Malta; Third country nationals, meaning non-EU, non-EEA, and non-Swiss citizens; People who can show a genuine, ongoing income rather than savings or a one-off payment; Anyone who wants a base in the EU without needing a Maltese job offer or making an investment.
