Is the Malta Digital Nomad Visa the same as the Nomad Residence Permit?

Based on our research, yes. 'Malta Digital Nomad Visa' is a widely used informal name for the same Residency Malta Agency scheme that is officially called the Nomad Residence Permit, not a separate product. If you see the two names used side by side elsewhere, they are very likely describing this one permit.

Who qualifies for the Nomad Residence Permit?

How much income do I need for the Malta Nomad Residence Permit?

The current minimum is a gross annual income of EUR42,000, around EUR3,500 a month, which took effect from 1 April 2024. Applicants who applied before that date kept the earlier EUR32,400 threshold. Do I need a Maltese employer or a local job offer?

No. The permit is based on income from outside Malta, whether from a foreign employer, a foreign company you hold a stake in, or clients established outside Malta. You do not need a Maltese employer or a local job offer.

How much does the Malta Nomad Residence Permit cost?

There is a non-refundable application fee of EUR300 per applicant and per family member, plus a separate fee of EUR100 for the residence card, both applying again at renewal. How long does the application take to process?

Residency Malta Agency states that processing typically takes around 30 working days from when your application fee is received, plus the time needed for background checks, and the residence card itself is typically ready a further three to four weeks after you arrive. How long does the permit last, and can I renew it?

It is issued for one year initially and can be renewed at the Agency's discretion for as long as you keep meeting the criteria, up to a maximum of three renewals, for a total of around four years. Does the Nomad Residence Permit lead to permanent residence or citizenship in Malta?

Based on our research, no. Time spent in Malta under this permit does not count towards the EU's long term residence directive or towards Maltese naturalisation. If long term settlement or citizenship is your goal, you would need a different Maltese residence route designed for that.

Is there a special tax rate for Nomad Residence Permit holders?

Yes. Under the Nomad Residence Permits (Income Tax) Rules, eligible holders can pay a flat 10 per cent Maltese tax rate on income from their authorised remote work, instead of Malta's standard progressive rates, which rise to 35 per cent, with the first 12 months of income under the permit exempt entirely. Can my family come with me to Malta?

Yes. A spouse or equivalent partner, minor children, and certain dependent or disabled adult children can be included on your application, each subject to the application fee.
