North America Tech Visa: US and Canada Routes
North America has two of the strongest markets for tech talent. The United States rewards a strong record through talent visas and green cards such as the O-1, EB-1A, and EB-2 NIW, several of which do not need a job offer, and a couple give permanent residency from the start. Canada runs a points based system, Express Entry, that leads to permanent residency directly, plus a fast work permit for people with a job offer.
The main routes
United States: O-1 talent visa, EB-1A and EB-2 NIW green cards you can petition for yourself, and the employer sponsored H-1B. Canada: the Global Talent Stream work permit, Express Entry including STEM draws, and Provincial Nominee Programs.
Costs, family and settlement
Plan for government fees plus legal help to package evidence, translations, proof of funds for Canada, and relocation. Both countries let close family join, and lead to citizenship, usually after about five years in the US and about three years in Canada.
