Portugal D2 Visa for entrepreneurs and freelancers
The D2 is Portugal's visa for freelancers, independent professionals, and entrepreneurs. It covers people who want to work under service contracts, or who want to start, relocate, or invest in a business in Portugal, assessed mainly on a business plan rather than a fixed income figure.
Who it is for
Freelancers, founders, and independent professionals in any field, not only technology, who can show a credible business plan or client contracts and financial means around the Portuguese minimum wage. No employer sponsor is needed.
Costs and settlement
The main costs are a consular visa fee and a separate residence permit fee collected in Portugal through AIMA, applied per person, plus company setup costs if you incorporate. Permanent residency is available after five years. Citizenship now generally requires ten years for most nationalities, or seven years for EU and Portuguese speaking country nationals, under a law that took effect in May 2026.
