UK Global Talent Visa for tech professionals
The UK Global Talent Visa lets digital technology professionals live and work in the UK without a job offer or a sponsor. You get endorsed by Tech Nation, then apply for the visa.
Who it is for
Engineers, data and AI specialists, product roles, designers, and technical founders. Two options: Exceptional Talent, for proven leaders generally with 5 or more years in tech, and Exceptional Promise, for emerging leaders with under 5 years. The 5 years counts from when you moved into technology. The work must be product-led digital technology; consulting and outsourcing do not qualify by default.
Criteria
There are five criteria and you must meet three: one mandatory criterion (you are a leader or a potential leader in digital technology) plus two of four optional criteria (innovation, recognition, significant contribution, academic excellence). Since January 2025 the innovation criterion requires evidence that the innovation was commercialised. You need three independent recommendation letters, a CV, and up to 10 pieces of evidence.
Costs
About £561 for the endorsement and about £205 for the visa, so around £766 for the main applicant, plus the Immigration Health Surcharge at about £1,035 per person per year paid upfront. Each dependant pays the full £766 fee plus their own surcharge. Fees are not refundable and change over time, so check GOV.UK.
Settlement
Indefinite leave to remain after 3 years on Exceptional Talent or 5 years on Exceptional Promise. You must show earnings in your endorsed field, with no minimum income threshold, and must not spend more than 180 days outside the UK in any rolling 12 month period.
