Which option is right for me, Exceptional Talent or Exceptional Promise?

Exceptional Talent is for established people in digital technology and generally suits those with 5 or more years in tech. Exceptional Promise is for people earlier in their careers. If you have more than 5 years of experience in digital technology you cannot be assessed as Exceptional Promise. The 5 years counts from when you moved into tech, not from when you started working, so a lawyer of 10 years who joined a legal tech firm 3 years ago counts as 3 years. What are the criteria for the UK Global Talent Visa?

There are five criteria and you need to meet three: one mandatory criterion, which is that you are a leader or a potential leader in digital technology, plus two of four optional criteria. The optional four are innovation, recognition, significant contribution, and academic excellence. The same criteria apply to both Exceptional Talent and Exceptional Promise, just assessed at different levels. Tech Nation updated its guide in January 2025, and the innovation criterion now expects evidence that the innovation was commercialised, such as revenue or contracts, rather than award wins alone.

The base cost is around £766 for the main applicant: about £561 for the endorsement and about £205 for the visa. Can I bring my family?

Yes. Your spouse or civil partner, an unmarried partner of at least 2 continuous years, and children under 18 can all come with you. Children over 18 qualify only if they already had permission to stay as your dependant and remain financially dependent on you. Each dependant pays the full visa fee and their own health surcharge for the same period as you, since the system does not currently allow different visa lengths within a family. What can I do on a Global Talent visa?

Almost anything. You can work for any employer, contract, freelance, advise, sit on boards, start any kind of business, or study. You can change jobs without reapplying. The two exceptions are that you cannot work as a professional sportsperson or as a doctor in training. This is much more flexible than the Skilled Worker visa, where you work for your sponsor, can only do 20 hours a week elsewhere, and cannot set up a business.

What happens if my endorsement is refused?

You can request an endorsement review, which is the appeal, or reapply with better evidence. The important limitation is that you cannot add new documents to a review. So prepare the original application with a review in mind and answer the questions an assessor might raise up front. Many people who are refused do qualify. They simply did not present their case in a way the assessor could see, and some of eMigr8's successes are people who were refused first time and succeeded after reworking the application.

Do I need to have spoken at tech events?

No, speaking at tech events is beneficial but not compulsory. Speaking is only one way to show recognition, which is one of the four optional criteria, and you only need two of those four. Awards and nominations, features in respected publications, and significant open-source contributions all count. You can also skip the recognition criterion entirely if you are stronger on the others.

Is Tech Nation still the endorsing body?

Yes, Tech Nation is the endorsing body for the digital technology route, which is why people call it the Tech Nation visa.
