UK Self Sponsorship Route
Self sponsorship is not a visa in its own right. It is a strategy: you set up a genuine UK company, that company gets a Home Office sponsor licence, and it sponsors you in a real role on a standard Skilled Worker visa. You hold the company as a shareholder rather than sitting as a director. All the Skilled Worker rules apply, including the RQF level 6 skill level and the £41,700 or going rate salary.
Is it legal in 2026?
Yes, and people have done it successfully, but it is under sharp Home Office scrutiny. The business must genuinely trade and the role must genuinely exist. Updated 2026 guidance lets the Home Office refuse where it believes a business exists mainly to help someone get a visa. Take regulated legal advice.
What you need
A genuinely trading company, a real graduate level role paid at or above the salary rules, and usually a UK based, settled person in a key sponsor role, since you generally cannot hold all the licence roles yourself.
Settlement
Because it leads to a Skilled Worker visa, you can apply for settlement after 5 years, subject to the proposed earned settlement reforms which are not yet law.
